Is There Such a Thing as Healthy Chips?

Is There Such a Thing as Healthy Chips?

What does “healthy” really mean when it comes to food? Most people would be quick to point out that certain foods like chips, candy, and desserts are not healthy, whereas foods like fruits and vegetables are. But the term is far more subjective than we think. Depending on a person’s lifestyle, dietary needs, and the ingredients of the food, sometimes there can be healthy chips and crackers — and unhealthy fruits and veggies. We need a new way of thinking about healthy eating.

What Are Healthy Snacks?

Healthy snacks are more than what’s on the front of a box. Most brands will put big claims on their packaging like “fat free” or “low carb” to pull customers in and buy them — and most of the time, this trick works. Claims without official certification, however, are often empty promises and don’t reflect the ingredients on the label.

However, even food labels don’t always give an accurate picture of how healthy a snack is. For example, the FDA once flagged a nut bar because it contained too high of a fat content. But this bar was full of cashews, almonds, and other nuts—foods which have a naturally high fat content. Contrary to popular belief, not all fat is bad  for us—in fact, our bodies desperately need it to function well! Nuts, olive oil, avocados, and other foods have lots of good fats for us, as opposed to the saturated fats in highly processed foods that aren’t as good.

Healthy snacks are also subjective to the user. Dairy products are technically healthy, as they can have high amounts of calcium and protein—things our bodies need. But if you’re lactose intolerant or dairy-free, these foods won’t have a healthy effect on your body. We have to redefine what healthy means for each of us and our unique needs.

Do Healthy Chips Exist?

Yes, they do! Chips aren’t inherently unhealthy. Oftentimes, they have GMOs or highly processed ingredients, or some of those fake dyes that make them unhealthy. But if you take away these ingredients and replace them with non-GMO, organic ones, you can have chips that are both healthy and tasty to snack on.

Plant Snacks wanted to create healthy tortilla chips to combat the stigma around these kinds of snacks being unhealthy. We set out to make something everyone could enjoy, regardless of their lifestyle or diet. All our products are naturally vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free because of the ingredients we carefully chose.

Our healthy crackers and chips come from a flour blend of whole grain corn, cassava root, psyllium husk, pea protein, and mushroom powder. Each serving contains 3 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber — much higher than the average chip will give you! These are important nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Try Healthy Chips from Plant Snacks

Our chips are the perfect, healthy alternative to the unhealthy options you see on the market today. And they come in a variety of delicious flavors, from Nacho Cheese to classic Sea Salt. Your taste buds won’t even realize that you’re not snacking on a healthier version of your favorite chips, but your body will, and you’ll be so much healthier because of it.

Order some today or, if we’re out of stock on our website, you can find us at Thrive Market, or in-person at a store near you.
